We are not gods, Dr Kancherla Ravindranath MD Global Hospitals

The Hindu : Front Page : Liver donor dies in city hospital
He said that the Global Hospitals had so far carried out eight `live donor' liver transplants, but Prameela was the first donor to have died.

Dr. K.Ravindranath, MD of the hospital, said:"We are not gods. We did every thing we could. The surgery was successful; his (recipient) liver was functioning well enough. Sepsis affects 20% transplant patients. The drugs we gave also numb the immune system further. If not for our efforts, Prameela(the donor) would not have lived so long

Despite emails to BBC & GMC & NHS UK, No one has looked into this case, which has several implications.

The BBC, the GMC, the NHS UK & Kings College, all of them are washing their hands of this case.

Organ transplant: Quacks mislead patient kin

KOLKATA, Feb. 3: The project to liver transplantation at the Institute of Liver Diseases (ILD), SSKM hospital, has run into rough weather. Even after the institute was set up, the state government did not take organ transplant over here, while it was awaiting a report on brain death from a team of experts. However, to make matters worse, quacks all over the state are misleading people about the implications of brain death.
Meanwhile, the health department is still trying to frame a suitable definition of brain death, that would be convincing enough for the patient's (who is clinically dead) kin.
The department's proposed awareness generating programme has also proved to be a non starter.
In the midst of all these issues, the patients' who require urgent liver transplant are suffering the lack of donors.
Doctors at ILD said currently three patients admitted in the hospital, require urgent transplantation of liver. All arrangements had already been made for undertaking the transplantations. But the efforts received a jolt as none of the relatives of potential donors were willing to donate their organs.
A senior official of the hospital said: “We are still trying to find donors, so that we are able to take up liver transplantation for these patients, as early as possible. We had recently identified two potential donors. Even, relatives of these donors had agreed to donate liver of the patients. But at the last moment, local quacks misled the relatives claiming brain death does not mean end of life.”
It can be recalled that the initiative to start liver transplantation at SSKM hospital was taken up two years ago. All required equipment have already been installed at the Institute of Liver Diseases of the hospital. Doctors have been imparted required training. But the process could not be started owing to lack of donors.
